Check out the Approx Banks playlist included from 10th of July 2022 in the GAZZARA PLAYS GENESIS YouTube channel. Here you’ll find Francesco Gazzara’s personal reinterpretation of various Tony Banks’ keyboard performances during Genesis live tours between 1971 and 1977 (1980 in one case). This is also a close approximation of the sounds and instruments originally used, due mainly to practical stage reasons. All sounds/presets keys changes are listed in the video when occurring. The backing tracks are usually a mix between the original studio or live stems (mainly drums and bass due to copyright reasons) while the keyboards audio performance is tracked live (including the odd bump notes) directly from the cameras microphones (therefore the “ambience” audio quality). The filming is done with two Canon 1200D cameras (side) and one iPhone camera (ceiling). Here’s the sleeve of GAZZARA’s new album Progression, out June 14th 2022. Time seems right for a deep prog rock record (inspired by Genesis, Yes, King Crimson Ā Gentle Giant, ELP, Anthony Phillips, Mike Oldfield….) with many other influences ranging from classical, folk and soundtrack music. The album has been inspired by Britain’s oldest road map (Gough Map, c.1360), an almost forgotten pilgrimage similar to the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Progression indicates the process of developing or moving gradually towards a more advanced state: after a choral introduction (“Misericordiaeā€) the following eleven tracks are named after some of the locations of the ancient route (“Old Way“) that runs between Southampton and Canterbury in the South of England. Written and recorded during the lastĀ  pandemic years (2020-2021), GAZZARA’s new album features seven passionate musicians playing a total of 22 different instruments. Progression will be released on IRMA Records as a limited edition CD available exclusively on the artist’s website and bandcamp page. On January 1st 2021 Italian TV Rai Tre broadcast the documentary Le Montagne Del Passato ViventeĀ (The Mountains Of TheĀ Living Past) by Luigi Cammarota, set on the borders between Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia: Ā Permosh, the Kelmand valley with its inaccessible mountains, the river Cem with 170 caves and the peaks 2500 meters high. All this magic landscape were soundtracked by Francesco Gazzara‘s original score music. This documentary is part of a four episodes TV series on Albania produced by Italian SD Cinematografica. Our Man In Rio inhales the vivid spirit of the city always swaying in samba rhythms in the warm light of Copacabana. The nice thing about Here It Comes Again are the audible details brought to light, otherwise buried under the band’s original sound, and assigned to the piano or the orchestral instruments. Some sounds more classical, while others have rock attributes, such as The Carpet Crawlers which actually only needs the vocals to be a full cover version“. Many thanks to Nik Brückner for his Here It Comes AgainĀ (Gazzara Plays Genesis) review on the encyclopedic prog Babyblaue german website! Click on the album sleeve to read the complete review:

On dec. 27th Gazzara Plays Genesis was online – together with members of famous 1970’s Italian prog rock bands as Le Orme, Area, Rovescio Della Medaglia, Osanna – for an event by the associationĀ Trasimeno Prog, wishing all a Happy New Year (much needed!) and playing a very short early Genesis tune: For AbsentĀ Friends. Here’s the video streaming excerpt:

Francesco Gazzara‘s original soundtrack for the Italian TV movieĀ Donne di Mafia (The Mafia Women) is re-released on dec. 28th 2020 as a high resolution format remaster (24bit) updating the original 11-tracks 2001’s CD with 20 more outtakes, alternate versions and unreleased compositions. Donne di MafiaĀ was directed by the late Giuseppe Ferrara, famous for his successful films about the mafia as One Hundred Days In Palermo and Giovanni Falcone. Filmed in different locations as Lecce, Palermo and Caracas, the movie was based on Liliana Madeo‘s book by the same name, where the mafia is seen through the eyes of women – wives, partners but also mafia bosses themselves – alternating moments of pathos and action as in the best Giuseppe Ferrara films of the ’80’s.
Francesco Gazzara‘s soundtrack makes an extensive use of tensions and musical thrilling solutions but also communicate the protagonists individual burden with intimate and warm melodies. The score opens with a typical cornet and strings mafia theme in the style of Morricone and Rota, then follows an original path through tribal rhythms, crescendos and touching female vocalising improvisations.

Latest Francesco Gazzara‘s TV and cinema score is now released as a high resolution audio digital format: Tre Volte Gerusalemme (Original Soundtrack). It is downloadable exclusively here: http://francescogazzara.bandcamp.com/album/tre-volte-gerusalemme-original-soundtrack

Tre Volte Gerusalemme sleeve web

Tre Volte Gerusalemme (Three Times Jerusalem) is a journey into three dimensions – space, time and spirituality – of a city disputed by Christians, Jews and Muslims. A place where everything is true and untrue at the same time, where facts happened for sure but never in an commonly acknowledged site or date. Journalist Franco Scaglia travels to Jerusalem together with authors Wlodek Goldkorn and Gabriele Tecchiato in search of an ideal: a small celestial city that each one of us – atheists, seculars or any religion churchgoers – carries inside himself as an human being. As explains director Simone Aleandri, “this documentary is not about a celebration but, underlining the historical moment we live in, it explores the connections between the three Abrahamic religions, in the same place where everything began 5.000 years ago and where everything still goes on”. Francesco Gazzara‘s soundtrack is highly influenced by the spirituality of such historical sites and many compositions titles reflect this. Ethnic instruments and vocals are merged with an overall epic and dramatic score, where the inputs of the three different religions are exploited in a musical meaning. This high resolution audio release also includes six unreleased compositions originally not included in the documentary’s soundtrack. The film was produced by Digital Studio & DVD with Rai Cinema and premiered on Italian national RAI UNO channel in 2014.

One more Francesco Gazzara‘s TV and cinema score is finally released as a high resolution audio digital format: La Luce Dei Crociati (Original Soundtrack). It is downloadable exclusively here: http://francescogazzara.bandcamp.com/album/mater-matera-original-soundtrack

La Luce Dei Crociati (sleeve) web

La Luce Dei Crociati (The Light Of The Crusaders) is a documentary directed by Francesco Saponaro – co-written with Andrea Di Consoli – tracing back the pilgrims and Crusaders sites during their long journey through the region of Puglia (Apulia) before their boarding from Brindisi to the Holy Land of Jerusalem. Emperor Frederick II‘s Castel Del Monte is filmed in all its past glory, science and its still present mysterious aura. The film was produced by Digital Studio & DVD with Rai Cinema and premiered on Italian national RAI UNO channel in 2013.
A spiritual work, underlined by Francesco Gazzara‘s soundtrack, made of historical musical timbres resonating through a kaleidoscope of mazy and dissonant chords. Gregorian modality meets modern ambient explorations.

One more Francesco Gazzara‘s TV and cinema score is finally released as a high resolution audio digital format: Mater Matera (Original Soundtrack).Ā Ā It is downloadable exclusively here: http://francescogazzara.bandcamp.com/album/mater-matera-original-soundtrack

Mater matera sleeve

Film teaser

Matera is the only provincial town in Italy without a train station, but in 2019 was declared ā€œCapital of European cultureā€. What is the future for this so-called City of Stones (CittĆ  dei Sassi) and at what price Matera enters the hall of fame of geographical notoriety? How deep is the separation from its past and history? Andrea Di Consoli, a writer of Lucanian origins, walks the streets of Sassi – the oldest Matera’s district declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 – and those of the suburbs (the ā€œnew Sassiā€), meeting the new demands of change together with the witnesses of a civilization that no longer exists – as the peasants narrated by Carlo Levi – in search of the city’s inner soul. The same divided soul of Italy, torn between a strong desire for modernization and the legacy of the past. Mater MateraĀ is directed by Simone Aleandri and produced by Clipper Media and Rai Cinema.
Francesco Gazzaraā€˜s soundtrack is suitably close to the bucolic atmospheres of the landscape, rather sparse and acoustic. Only a few instruments – especially plucked strings and rural horns – together with appropriately sound designed effects describe the simplicity of a magic ancient place suddenly turned into a global attraction.
