As Time Goes By (L’Uomo Che Disegnava i Sogni) is a film by Simone Aleandri, a biopic on the late Italian artist Silvano Campeggi, illustrator and poster designer for Casablanca, Ben Hur and many other famous Hollywood productions. The movie was recently screened at Rome’s “Festival Del Cinema”. Francesco Gazzara’s soundtrack goes back to the heritage of 1950s and 1960s Italian neorealist cinema although inserting some intimate acoustic and chamber music ingredients.

Immediately after the end of WW2 the British Army‘s Jewish Engineer Brigade, Solel Boneh, managed to rescue hundreds of children who survived the terror of the death camps. From 1945 to 1948, a small Lombard municipality named Selvino became their home. Orphans of their families – all lost in the Shoah tragedy – the “children of Selvino” slowly found moments of serenity and resumed a normal life. Between 1946 and 1949, most of these children were embarked on the motor ship Rondine Enzo Sereni. Almost all of them were received in the kibbutz Tze’elim and Hanita of Eretz Israel. They still live there together as a big family, replicating their happy Selvino model. The film is directed by Francesca Muci.
The soundtrack written by Francesco Gazzara recreates the soundscape and atmosphere of the original Selvino colony, also describing the interior turmoil of the young orphans who lived there together for three years. Many nostalgic and romantic piano and violin moments, balanced with more ambient and experimental compositions along the tracklist.

Directed by Simone Aleandri, documentary Sono Cosa Nostra celebrates the 20th anniversary of “Libera“, a network of more than 1600 associations fighting against all types of Mafia. “Libera” – founded by vicar Don Ciotti from Turin – uses land and assets seized from the Mafia to set up local food cooperatives, anti-drug projects and community centers. “Libera” is also responsible for the creation of Law Article 109 which allows the seizure of assets belonging the Mafia. The film is produced by Clipper Media and Rai Cinema. Francesco Gazzara‘s totally acoustic score brings an overall feeling of fresh restart, the right soundscape for such places now ready to live a new life away from the distortions of the Mafia illegal property. Gazzara’s compositions vary from the gentle exposure of the main theme and its many variations to more ambient and at times dramatic urban moments.

Francesco Gazzara‘s soundtrack is suitably close to the bucolic atmospheres of the landscape, rather sparse and acoustic. Only a few instruments – especially plucked strings and rural horns – together with appropriately sound designed effects describe the simplicity of a magic ancient place suddenly turned into a global attraction.

La Luce Dei Crociati (The Light Of The Crusaders) is a documentary directed by Francesco Saponaro – co-written with Andrea Di Consoli – tracing back the pilgrims and Crusaders sites during their long journey through the region of Puglia (Apulia) before their boarding from Brindisi to the Holy Land of Jerusalem. Emperor Frederick II‘s Castel Del Monte is filmed in all its past glory, science and its still present mysterious aura. The film was produced by Digital Studio & DVD with Rai Cinema and premiered on Italian national RAI UNO channel in 2013. A spiritual work, underlined by Francesco Gazzara‘s soundtrack, made of historical musical timbres resonating through a kaleidoscope of mazy and dissonant chords. Gregorian modality meets modern ambient explorations. The soundtrack was originally published by Warner Chappell Music but the updated release contains other previously unreleased tracks owned by the composer.

Tre Volte Gerusalemme (Three Times Jerusalem) is a journey into three dimensions – space, time and spirituality – of a city disputed by Christians, Jews and Muslims. A place where everything is true and untrue at the same time, where facts happened for sure but never in an commonly acknowledged site or date. Journalist Franco Scaglia travels to Jerusalem together with authors Wlodek Goldkorn and Gabriele Tecchiato in search of an ideal: a small celestial city that each one of us – atheists, seculars or any religion churchgoers – carries inside himself as an human being. As explains director Simone Aleandri, “this documentary is not about a celebration but, underlining the historical moment we live in, it explores the connections between the three Abrahamic religions, in the same place where everything began 5.000 years ago and where everything still goes on”. Francesco Gazzara‘s soundtrack is highly influenced by the spirituality of such historical sites and many compositions titles reflect this. Ethnic instruments and vocals are merged with an overall epic and dramatic score, where the inputs of the three different religions are exploited in a musical meaning. This high resolution audio release also includes six unreleased compositions originally not included in the documentary’s soundtrack. Costantino – Imperatore D’Oriente E D’Occidente (2014, Warner Chappell Music / Copyright Control)
Emperor Constantine‘s dream was to build another Capital town across the Mediterranean Sea. A city of enormous artistic treasures, projected to the Empire’s eastern borders, competing in beauty and power with the glory of ancient Rome. Above all, a place where everyone would be able to express their religious beliefs. The dream was called Constantinople.
This documentary features the journey – back and forth to the East and the West – of an expert writer and narrator (Franco Scaglia) with two famous Italian archaeologists (Andrea Carandini and Stefano De Luca). From the banks of the Tiber – heart of the Roman Empire‘s Capital -, from the courtyards of the Capitoline Museums – where the remains of the Constantine‘s colossal statue are kept -, the protagonists will travel to the waters of Bosphorus. Right above the ancient ruins of Constantinople today there is Istanbul, the Turkish city of mosques still retaining some of the spirit that conquered the Emperor of Ponte Milvio in the IV century AC.
Francesco Gazzara‘s soundtrack ebbs and flows between spirituality and an epic, sometimes adventurous feeling. The more orchestral effective numbers depicting the grandiosity of Rome and Costantinople alternate with suggestive and mystical moments where the melody and the arrangements suggest the complexity and the intricacies of the Roman Empire’s eastern history.

Donne Di Mafia (The Mafia Women, 2001) is an Italian TV movie directed by the late Giuseppe Ferrara, famous for his successful films about the mafia as One Hundred Days In Palermo and Giovanni Falcone. Filmed in different locations as Lecce, Palermo and Caracas, the movie was based on Liliana Madeo‘s book by the same name, where the mafia is seen through the eyes of women – wives, partners but also mafia bosses themselves – alternating moments of pathos and action as in the best Giuseppe Ferrara films of the ’80’s. Two women involved in the mafia, as Teresa Uncini (Tosca D’Aquino) and Cosima Sorrentini (Mietta), find the courage and determination to end their passive roles at whatever cost, with the help of a brave woman judge, Giulia Marotta (Barbara D’Urso).
Francesco Gazzara‘s soundtrack makes an extensive use of tensions and musical thrilling solutions but also communicate the protagonists individual burden with intimate and warm melodies. The score opens with a typical cornet and strings mafia theme in the style of Morricone and Rota, then follows an original path through tribal rhythms, crescendos and touching female vocalising improvisations. This remastered soundtrack updates the original 11-tracks CD from 2001 with 20 more outtakes, alternate versions and unreleased compositions.

Viva Sarajevo (2012, Warner Chappell Music Italiana)
Un documentario nel luogo che più di ogni altro ha saputo incarnare lo spirito universale del nostro tempo: Sarajevo, la città dove si apre il ‘900, con l’avvio della Grande Guerra, e si chiude, col ritorno, venti anni or sono, degli assedi e della pulizia etnica nel cuore dell’Europa. Gesù E La Maddalena (2012, Warner Chappell Music Italiana)
Un viaggio nei luoghi storici della vita di Cristo. La prima tappa mostra le immagini di Magdala, la città che ha dato i natali a Maria, detta La Maddalena, di cui l’archeologo francescano Padre De Luca interpreta la storia: quella di una donna colta, aperta al dialogo, forse la prima degli apostoli. Una città ricca all’epoca con le sue acque termali, dove malati e convalescenti accorrevano numerosi. Il viaggio prosegue a Cafarnao ed è sempre padre De Luca a spiegare gli aspetti quotidiani della vita di Gesù in quella zona, dove fu ospite della casa di Pietro, ritrovata recentemente dagli studiosi.
